San Juan Mountains

Finding America: The San Juans

Mountain Towns, Alpine Hikes, ColoradoBruce L2 Comments

August Continued

Silverton, Colorado

The Silverton area would be my next base camp for a while. It was great to be above treeline again with some good camping spots and new trails to explore!

Side-by Side Day to Engineer Pass (12,000’)

This was a different kind of day. The host where I was staying invited me to join him and a few friends for a ride in his RZR side-by-side. We covered a surprising amount of ground on narrow mountain-pass roads, high in Colorado’s San Juans—a region known for its rugged backcountry routes and dramatic alpine terrain.[usda]

It was a fun change of pace: covering big country in a high-powered, 1,000cc RZR rather than the usual way—on foot.

Highland Mary Lake Trail

Out and back, 7.91 mi, 1,400' elevation gain

This was an early highlight of the year and one of the many scenic hikes I found. Most of it sits above treeline, with lakes and big views throughout. It was one of my last hikes before heading north, ahead of several back-to-back days of rain in the forecast.
